Security

About: The Auditor security collection is a live-system based on KNOPPIX.
It provides tools for analyzing the security of a system. It features a
menu structure that reflects the stages of a security check:
foot-printing, analysis, scanning, wireless, brute-forcing, cracking. In
addition to about 300 security tools, the collection includes background
information regarding standard configuration and passwords, truly
extensive word lists, and more mundane productivity tools.

Changes: The "nopcmcia" option was removed from savemode. A new kernel was
built. New applications were added, including Nasty (a GPG secret key
bruteforcer), aireply (airforge), Exploit tree, Kwifimanager, lsrscan,
SMBspy, and a version of gpsd with better USB support. BIND 9 was added
again. New drivers and patches were added for RTC support in the kernel,
prism54, madwifi, hostap, and wlanng patched for packet injection.
Bugfixes were made for the John default files. PCMCIA configuration for
other cards was added. Some scripts were fixed.

  by kmh (http://freshmeat.net/users/kmh1979/)

Education
Information Management
Text Editors

About: Dictator is a program for on-screen reading of text files,
developed with the intention of making it easier to read some of the fine
electronic texts available on the net, such as those produced by The
Gutenberg Project. The problem with these texts is that reading them on
screen is not particularly pleasant and printing them out is even less
pleasant. Dictator employs the Rapid Serial Visual Projection (RSVP)
method of displaying words consecutively in the same place, at a
user-controllable rate. In theory, this method prevents unconscious
re-reading of adjacent text and decreases the tendency of the reader to
oralise the text, allowing for increased reading speeds. It also allows
the use of larger fonts for text display which improves text clarity.

Changes: This release adds file history, customisable text filters (e.g.
open PDF, DOC, RTF), URL open, customisable Web references, simple text
search, navigation by paragraph, the ability to open from clipboard
(wxPython 2.5 only), some help documentation, a multiple size icon set
for Windows, and the ability for text to wrap in wxSTC.

Internet
Internet :: Proxy Servers
System

About: Fair NAT is a script for configuring NAT on dedicated Linux
routers. It's designed to be highly customizable and therefore well
documented. A configuration file lets you specify which clients on your
LAN should be allowed to use the router, which ports are to be forwarded
to which client, and much more. It uses the kernel's Traffic Shaping
capabilities to share bandwidth in a fair manner among users. Some kernel
patches are recommended for better performance. Experimental support for
peer-to-peer traffic detection is available.

Changes: This release adds support for rate units (e.g. 2mbit, 100kbit,
and 4096bps are now all valid). The default unit is kilobit for backward
compatibility. You can specify a custom download/upload ceiling rate per
user. However, it must not be lower than the guaranteed rate.

Communications
Internet
System

About: GNU VPE creates a virtual ethernet by creating host-to-host tunnels
between multiple endpoints. Unlike other virtual private "network"
solutions which merely create a single tunnel, it creates a real network
with multiple endpoints. It is designed to be conceptually simple and
straightforward to setup (assuming prior IP routing knowledge) without
sacrificing flexibility. It is designed to sit on the gateway machines of
company branches to connect them, but it can also be used to tunnel into a
VPN with a variety of protocols (RAW IP, ICMP, UDP, TCP, HTTPS-Proxy, DNS).

Changes: Some OS-specific tunnel drivers have been improved, and two
drivers, native/darwin and tincd/bsd, have been added. The OS
documentation has been improved considerably. A bug that caused the TCP
transport to not work has been fixed and config parsing is now more
robust by skipping unparseable lines. Options can now also be specified
on the command line. if-up and node-up/down scripts are now run by the
shell and have information relating to other nodes available. Last but
not least, some DNS transport tunable values can now be configured in the
config file.

  by Grahame Bowland (http://freshmeat.net/users/grahameb/)
  Tue, Apr 19th 2005 13:51

System :: Networking

About: Interapplet is a GNOME applet that allows for interface
configuration using the Debian ifupdown system. It integrates with that
system in a way that allows the user full use of the command line
utilities without the applet losing any state information.

Changes: This release uses DBUS to get the list of devices. It also puts
some extra information into the menus. This is a major improvement.
Interapplet no longer looks at "mapping" lines in /etc/network/interfaces.
Bugs in the bonobo code have been fixed so that removing the applet from
the menu actually terminates it. A Debian dependency on gksu has been
added. InterApplet.server has been fixed.

[025] - Internet DJ Console 0.0.3.9
  by Stephen Fairchild (http://freshmeat.net/users/psoriasis/)
  Tue, Apr 19th 2005 07:41

About: Internet DJ console makes it possible for people to connect to a
Shoutcast or Icecast server and be a DJ. It is intended to be something
that the bedroom DJ will want to and enjoy using, and not just be a tool
for streaming music to the Internet. It facilitates live radio shows with
DJ chatter and supports cross-fading for dance mixes.

Changes: The program can be launched via a single mouse click. Much better
behavior is used when a server login fails. Mixer and server modules are
now launched and closed with the main app. MP3 low-bandwidth streaming was
added. Support for M4A files was added. WMA is now fully supported. The
ability to read ID3 tags and the like was also greatly improved. Various
other improvements and code cleanups were done.

About: Jailkit is a set of utilities to allow quick creation of limited
user accounts in a chroot jail. It contains a safe logging daemon, shells
that can restrict users, utilities to start daemons in a chroot jail, and
utilities for easy setup of chroot jails.

Changes: This release fixes some issues with Gentoo Linux, and possibly
other Linux variants that featured different ldd output. It furthermore
fixes several minor FreeBSD issues. The --force option of jk_init was
broken, and is now fixed. The defaults in jk_init.ini are extended for
more Linux distributions and *BSD versions, and most important, the error
reporting by jk_lsh and jk_chrootsh is more more verbose, and much easier
to understand.

About: JGraph is a robust and complete graph component that is better than
many of its commercial competitors. With the JGraph zoomable component, you
can display objects and relations (networks) in any Swing UI. It can also
be used on the server-side to read an GXL graph, apply a custom layout
algorithm, and return the result as an SVG image.

Changes: Another review of the javadocs has been made on the frozen 5.4.x
API. Various changes have been made to resolve issues with edges whose
source and target are ports on the same vertex. Labels on such edges can
now be moved, and the routing functionality has been corrected.
PortView.getLocation now has an additional parameter to support these
changes, but no methods have been removed from the API.

[068] - TabLaunch 0.6
  by dlam (http://freshmeat.net/users/dnlam/)
  Tue, Apr 19th 2005 23:58

Desktop Environment

About: TabLaunch is a simple and lightweight but cool-looking X
application launch bar based on YeahLaunch. It displays a user-specified
list of applications as tabs along the top of the screen. The user can
specify an x coordinate offset to position the launch bar or right-align
it. The launch bar becomes hidden after a specified delay. Each tab can be
displayed as text or an icon. Tabs are "enlarged" or zoomed-in when the
mouse is over a tab. Imlib or Imlib2 can be used to show and enlarge
icons.

Changes: In version 0.6, the source code was reorganized, most
command-line options are able to be set in the config file, and various
bugs were fixed, including an auto-hiding inefficiency due to transparent
icons with holes and parsing of the config file (line following comments
were being ignored). The -rx option was removed, and '-r -x pixels' can be
used instead. A yoffset (-y) option was added for vertically positioning
the launchbar, along with a --no_label option that gets rid of the label
on the icon when --no_caption is used.

About: YourKit Java Profiler is a CPU and memory profiler that makes it
easy to solve wide range of CPU- and memory-related performance problems.
It features automatic leak detection, powerful tools for the analysis of
memory distribution, an object heap browser, comprehensive memory tests as
part of your JUnit testing process, extremely low profiling overhead,
transparent deobfuscation support, and integration with Eclipse, JBuilder,
IntelliJ IDEA, and JDeveloper IDEs.

Changes: NetBeans 4.1 Beta is now supported. The profiled application
launched from IDEA 5.0-EAP (Irida) no longer erroneously uses the agent
library embedded into IDEA, instead of using agent library from
appropriate YourKit Java Profiler installation. .sh files (in samples
directory and those that are generated by J2EE server integrations) are

installation is not found in the Windows registry, the native launcher
yjp.exe tries to launch the profiler UI with "javaw" in the current PATH.
