by Kathryn H (http://freshmeat.net/users/kah18/)
Sun, May 22nd 2005 06:07
Multimedia :: Graphics
Security
Security :: Cryptography
About: DIIT provides a simple tool that can hide a message inside a 24-bit
colour image so that knowing how it was embedded, or performing statistical

Changes: The UI now takes on the system's look and feel. The program
checks for image libraries performed on startup and monitors system memory
to ensure that there is enough to process the image. A bug in the
BattleSteg shuffling algorithm has been fixed. Benchmarking tools are
further supported in this release (but are not yet integrated into the
GUI, command line only).

by J.H.M. Dassen (Ray) (http://freshmeat.net/users/jdassen/)
Sun, May 22nd 2005 12:21
Desktop Environment :: Gnome
About: Gnumeric is a powerful and easy to use spreadsheet using GNOME. Its
goal is to provide a full featured spreadsheet and a smooth migration path
for people and organizations currently using proprietary applications. It
provides more sheet functions and greatly improved accuracy when compared
to Microsoft's Excel. A plugin system lets you extend Gnumeric, adding
functions, I/O formats, and real time data capabilities. The existing
Python, Guile, and Perl plugins let you define complex functions. Gnumeric
is capable of reading and writing MS Excel, and reading Lotus, Applix,
Quattro Pro, OpenCalc, XBase, DIF, SYLK, HTML, Psion, MPS, oleo, sc, misc.
text formats, and its native XML. It can also generate Latex, HTML, and
others.
Changes: This is the first development release after the GOffice reverse
merger. A long-standing hang problem when exiting the Gnome session with
an iconized Gnumeric was fixed. A new plugin with statistical functions
using the same calling conventions as The R Project was created (the
actual code is not a 100% match, though.). There are many Win32
improvements, clipboard support for images, and accuracy improvements for
extreme-value cases of statistical functions.

Sun, May 22nd 2005 12:54
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
About: HouseSpider is a Java applet that adds indexing and search
capability to Web sites. It can search by two methods: by spidering
through the site, or by searching a cached index file. Spider-searching is
slow, but very easy to set up and requires no maintenance. Cache-searching
requires only a little more attention to set up and is sometimes even
faster than CGI programs. HouseSpider also supports compression of the
index file and boolean searches. Translations for several languages are
provided, and it can handle Web sites in any language or encoding.
Changes: This release fixes several bugs related to local file search (on
hard drive or CD-ROM). It adds rudimentary support for iframes and makes
the applet support links where the URL is enclosed by single quotes (in
addition to the standard double quotes.)

in exactly one segment) for use in linguistic research from a list of words
in UTF-8 Unicode. By default, only searches for pairs of words of the same
length differing in exactly one segment. Command line options allow the
addition of single insertions or deletions and single transpositions. In
order to find all minimal pairs it is normally necessary for the input
notation to use one character for each segment. Even in IPA transcription,
this is often not the case. minpair provides for this situation by

About: Peeranha42 is an all-in-one software solution for P2P networks. The
software consists of two components, the P42 Client and the P42 Development
Kit. The client is the core of the software package and has a special
pluggable architecture. Furthermore, it builds up the interface between
the P2P network of JXTA and plugins using P2P networks. Due to the fact
that developing a P2P application is generally much harder and time
expensive than developing a simple client-server application, the client
offers an abstract network layer for easy development of P2P applications
in the form of P42 Plugins in minimum time. Some plugins are available for
download.
Changes: Certificate management with ICCP, user dialogs for certificate

[051] - Plash 1.8
by mseaborn (http://freshmeat.net/users/mseaborn/)
Sun, May 22nd 2005 12:58
Security
About: Plash (the Principle of Least Authority Shell) is a Unix shell that
lets you run Unix programs with access only to the files and directories
they need to run. In order to implement this, the filesystem is
virtualized. Each process can have its own namespace, which can contain a
subset of your files. Plash is implemented by modifying GNU libc and
replacing the system calls that use filenames. For example, open() is
changed so that it sends a message to a file server via a socket. If the
request is successful, the server sends the client a file descriptor.
Processes are run in a chroot jail under dynamically-allocated user IDs.
No kernel modifications are required. Existing Linux binaries work
unchanged.
Changes: It's now possible to build Plash's modified glibc from scratch
without manual intervention. There's now an option for granting programs
access to the X11 Window System automatically, so you can run X programs
conveniently (it's off by default because X11 is not secure; clients can
interfere with each other.) There's a new way of setting options in the
shell. This release has limited support for directory file descriptors, so
XEmacs can run under it.

[055] - Redet 6.3
by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
Sun, May 22nd 2005 20:09
Text Processing :: Linguistic
About: Redet (Regular Expression Development and Execution Tool) is a tool
for developing and executing regular expressions using any of more than 20
search programs, editors, and programming languages. For each program in
each locale a palette showing the available regular expression constructs
is provided. The features of each program are determined by running a test
suite, which guarantees that they will be correct for the particular
program version in use and for the user's locale. The locale may be
changed without exiting Redet. Selections from the palette may be copied
to the regular expression window with a mouse click. Definitions can be
added to the palette via an initialization file. The regular expressions
executed are recorded in a history list, from which entries may be copied
to the regular expression window with a mouse click. This allows complex
regular expressions to be developed in pieces. When a suitable regular
expression has been constructed it may be saved to a file. Named character
classes may be defined in a file or entered interactively. As long as the
underlying program supports Unicode, Redet fully supports UTF-8 Unicode.
Changes: The existing character entry tools have been improved and two new
ones added: one for entering characters by their Unicode codepoint, and the
other for creating custom entry widgets. The search tools have been
improved, and tools added for going to a specific line or character. A
Unix manual page is now provided.

[066] - Task Coach 0.38
by Frank Niessink (http://freshmeat.net/users/fniessink/)
Sun, May 22nd 2005 18:04
Office/Business :: Scheduling
About: Task Coach is a simple todo manager to manage personal tasks and
todo lists. It grew out of a frustration that well-known task managers,
such as those provided with Outlook or Lotus Notes, do not provide
facilities for composite tasks. Often, tasks and other things to do
consist of several activities. Task Coach is designed to deal with
composite tasks.
Changes: Features added include a Simplified Chinese user interface, an
autosave setting to automatically save after every change, and a backup
setting to create a backup when opening a Task Coach file.

[067] - The Ng Java Roguelike Engine 0.2.4
by Thomas Seufert (http://freshmeat.net/users/seufet/)
Sun, May 22nd 2005 12:20
About: The goal of the Ng Java Roguelike Engine is to make it easy for
anyone to create their own rogue-like game, and to make it possible for
programmers to create truly outstanding variants. The project currently
consists of three components: the Core, the Variant Manager, and the
Prototype. It also includes an unsupported non-Ng Angband project that was
nearly completed in 2000-2001.
Changes: This release focuses on gameplay enhancements for SimpleGame.
Several new monsters, including cold-breathing white dragons, spice things
up. Try the new "repeat" command after eating or zapping something. Just
press "space" immediately afterward to eat/zap the same item again. With
wands, this works with any wand of the same type, so if you have 30
charges spread among 8 different wands, you can just zap once and hit
space 29 times.
