The version in the apt archives was the > one which caused, I believe, the problem. Please try the rpm from the Sun website (or the 1.5 java version) and let me know if that works. I'm not sure if it is the package, your mozilla config or something else. You also might want to start mozilla with a clean profile (or as a clean newly-added user). There have been ugly cases before of profile pollution causing weird behaviour. PS I think both firefox and mozilla should have an interface to disable plugins case by case for situations like this.
