Could you try reading the DVD with xine or mplayer and see what gives?

mplayer dvd://1 and xine both died when trying to read the DVD.
mplayer's error was similar to the error that dvdrip gave, xine gave
some cryptic error that I interpret to be similar. Neither mplayer nor
xine were able to access the DVD drive.
