OK, I figured this out.

There's now a "Workaround transcode NPTL bugs" option on the
"Miscellaneous options" tab in the preferences. If this is on,
"LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5" is added to the environment, which gets passed
on to all child processes. This option is on by default.

Of course, if your libc requires a kernel with NPTL to function, very
bad things happen.
