I have seen exactly the same problem, for several weeks, during which 
I have updated successfully other packages. Only "rar" reports wrong 
checksum, even after "yum clean all". I don't have a full disk (and 
did not since the error first appeared) and I don't use a proxy.

I had initially ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de as the http server, after 
seeing the error and thinking that the mirror corrupts either the 
package or the metadata, I have also tried with apt.sw.be and the 
error remained...

As the OP mentioned, it's possible to make yum ignore this error - 
this doesn't mean however that the package can be installed... and 
this is more annoying (to me at least) than the error message itself.
