bootstrapping probs with sed-4.0.5

Hello list !

I´ve managed to install Gentoo 1.4.-rc1 on a DEC Alpha XL266. Everything went 
fine until the bootstrap...

compiling/linking the sed-4.0.5. package I get a message like: 

/bin/ld cannot find -lc

Since I am absolutely new to Gentoo I do not know where to start looking for 
a solution of the prob.

Any comment and help is appreciated,

ps: after one more "emerge rsync" and bootstrapping the error persists....
