Hmm, I've installed gentoo on a SparcClassic with 20M of memory, booting with a tftp image, which takes up a couple of M's, so the install just used about 15M or 16M of memory, but with a swap partition of about 100M it installed just fine :). (beware! the libperl ebuild wants a lot of ram during compile, at least 40M+, on my first attempt the swap partition was to small :) Check here for some stats: http://www.gnodde.org/stats.php/arcadia As you can see, it runs just fine on low memory machines, it barely touches the swap in normal (non-)usage :).
