Before you start reinstalling (after you recover
whatever you can), you might want to check that disk
for bad blocks. I recently had one of the original
RZ26's in my XLT give it up. Fortunately, I only used
it for swap and /usr/portage so swapping in a "new"
disk was easy. Interestingly, my mysterious system
hangs have also disappeared. I bet they might have
been caused by bad blocks on the swap partition.
