Why would you want to "consolidate" rsync servers? If you do this, you lose stability. Why? Because right now the servers are scattered across the globe. No matter where you are there probably is a fast, local rsync server located at a non-bandwidth capped university or generous company. I guarantee, no matter how much $ you made from orders, that you could not support the users we have today with the amount of bandwidth that $ could buy. A second thing to consider is that, if you consolidate the rsync servers, and that place has an outage, gentoo's update system goes down until those servers come back up. Right now Gentoo ( imho ) is not geared towards corporations. There are no easy, readily available tools to roll-out desktops / servers, or update multiple machines easily. If you wish to do this, its a fair investment of time to get it setup correctly. Until these tools exist, no company will want to put $ behind the project. ( Some of these issues this project hopes to correct ) The things you speak of "improve the infustructure" (s/infustructure/infrastructure) is very broad, and non-defining. Just my 2cents. -AllanonJL On Mon, 17 Jan 2005, Michael Miller wrote: > first of all most NNTP servers don't let you download binarys and > cover only a small ammount of groups. and second of all if the rsyncs > were consolidated it would require a minimum ammount of effort to > maintain them, and any problems could be fixed fairly easily.
