Well, it certainly is an issue on Sempron - like you mention below, tomcat
was just one issue; I have to manually specify java opts when I do other
stuff too, like building/testing grails, and when running a webapp w/ jetty.
In fact, that was the whole reason I tried moving to tomcat in the first
place - merely to figure out exactly where I was having issues with my webapp.

Wish I could help there, but I only have access to any other 64bit boxen.

So, this particular problem isn't occurring w/ sun-jdk-1.6.0 on amd64?

Maybe I'd be better off just upgrading to 6 rather than fighting w/ 5 on
64bit.
