emerge ._* files

you know how when you do an emerge world, you get all those ._* files in
/etc/ and below?  well it just made 28 new ones on my machine and most of
them are no different from what i already have (some are though and are
simply copies of the original files before i edited them).

is there a way to scan the /etc/ directory and compare each ._* file to its
couterpart and unless any differences exist, just delete the ._* file?
