Hmmmm.  My IDE config section is below.  I don't see where I have enabled any
specific chipsets, and I see the following line not set: 

# CONFIG_IDE_CHIPSETS is not set

I don't ever recall having to specify an IDE chipset during kernel config, and 
I don't recall disabling any in this case.  Doesn't 'make menuconfig' start 
with your existing configuration?

I'll have to try reconfiguring and compiling next time I have access to the 
console...which may be a few days :(
