emerge rsync hangs

Hi,
when I make an "emerge rsync" the sync process seems to start normal.
The file list is received ("... done").
But when the list of packages is displayed, the process stops after an
arbitrary number of lines displayed. After a few minutes or so the
following error message is displayed:
rsync error: timeout in data send/receive (code 30) at io.c(85)
rsync: connection unexpectedly close (536210 bytes read so far)
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(150)

I can emerge packages (I've downloaded the portage tree manually and
emerged the whole KDE system without problems). I've updated rsync,
portage and all packages are up to date.
An "emerge rsync" worked about two weeks ago.
Any hints how to solve this?
