GRUB fails to boot from (hd1,0)

Hi all!

I have just completed installation of Gentoo 1.2 :-) base on my 2nd HDD
(hd1) but I have the following stubborn problem with GRUB:

If I install it normally in (hd1,0) as follows: root (hd1,0) setup (hd1)
then it fails to boot and I get Error 15 when it reaches stage 1.5
during the booting process from (hd1). But if I setup GRUB in the 1st
disk (hd0)
with: root (hd1,0) setup (hd0) then it works fine and will load Gentoo
from the 2nd HDD or SuSE from the 1st HDD.

This problem appeared when I first installed OpenBSD 3.1 on the 2nd disk
for evaluation, partitioning the disk with the BSD disk label editor.
Later when installing Gentoo I partitioned using fdisk but it appears
that partitioning the disk and writing a BSD disk label has left behind
some garbage on the disk that prevents GRUB from loading itself beyond
stage 1.5. I re-installed Gentoo twice, each time deleting all existing
partitions and starting from scratch but I have the same problem.

I have the impression that I have seen this sort of problem mentioned
somewhere but its a lot of effort re-installing Gentoo over and over
with no result so I will greately appreciate any help on this issue!

Thanks in advance!
