yeah, i think this is like what you suggest by yourself, the device is
not recognised and the driver not loaded. Are you sure that you compiled
the correct driver for your network card?
the cardctl uses afaik the same way as lspci to display the card
information.
another hint, i solved a problem like that on a slackware system by
upgrading the cardmgr software..
