how to play music CDs?

I am really happy with Gentoo sofar, but I am also discovering the pathetic extent of my ignorance in (for example) things multimediatic :-( Sound is working fine and I can play out of the music archive which I previously saved on disc. I'd like to get to the point where I can pop a music CD into my CD/DVD reader and click on something to play or OGGify it. This was working under redhat+KDE (which I am glad to dump, RH I mean, I love KDE), but I never knew how. I am quite happy figuring things out, but I need to be pointed in the right direction to get started. I am at the moment rather less than blissfully ignorant.
