first boot: error moutning /proc: only root can do that

Hi There! I'm new to the list, as well as Gentoo, though a Linux veteren of 3 years (still learning, though!). I just installed the 'Stage 3" tarball for Athlon on my, well, AMD Athlon system. I used "Toms Root Disk" to initially boot the machine, then bunzipped/untarred the Athlon image. Everything was fine when I chroot'd, compiled the kernel, got Grub installed, etc. However, when I try to boot, I get the following error: ----- * Mounting /proc [ oops ] * The "mount" command failed with the error: only root can do that * Since this is a critical task, startup cannot continue ----- The archives do not seem to have had this come up before, so I'm hoping someone will have come across this, and know what is wrong? I guess I'm kinda confused, since I thought I was booting as 'root', so why won't /proc be mounted?
