ALSA: can't open /dev/sound/dsp

Hello,

This may be more of an ALSA/devfsd problem, but I
thought I'd check here first.  I have installed the
ALSA drivers from source before on other systems, but
never using 'devfsd'.  When I try to play an MP3 using
MPlayer (or mpg123), I get the following error:

audio_setup: can't open audio device /dev/sound/dsp:
no such file or directory
couldn't open/init audio device ->  NOSOUND
---

Here is the ALSA/OSS portion of my /et/devfsd.con
file:

LOOKUP     mixer      MODLOAD
LOOKUP     midi       MODLOAD

And sure enough, /dev/sound/dsp does not exist;
attempts to create it using 'mknod' succeed, but I
still get he same error.  Is there a way to correct
this?  Or am I missing a package?
