So, every time I try to untar the ISO, (after boor from CD, partition,
filesystem creation/mount) it hums along till it hits './bin/pgawk',
then hangs, eventually erroring out on a decidedly non-specific I/O
error.

I've downloaded several times, verified the ISO's MD5sum, and burned
multiple CDs. So, I thought I'd try mounting the downloaded ISO as a
loopback and poking around a bit.

My problem is that when I I boot from the CD, I find a
'/cdroot/nocompress' which is where th stage1 compressed tar ball
hides. When I loopback mount the ISO, that directory is suspiciously
absent.

Can someone clue me in here?

I'm about ready to throw in the towel here, or at least wait for 1.4rc2
or 1.4final to come out.....

AdvThanksance,

-Mark
