the files?

If you do (for example):

emerge --fetchonly apache

It will download all the files needed to install apache and put them into
/usr/portage/distfiles. Later, when you're off the network and you do:

emerge apache

portage will see that the files it needs are in /usr/portage/distfiles and
install from those.

While at work, you should run emerge --fetchonly for all of the packages
that you'll want to install later. You don't need to explicitly know
where the packages are stored. Emerge will figure that out
for you.
