Re: GRUB install issue w/1.4_rc1

I was having the same problems as you are describing.  Although, I'm using an onboard scsi controller, and an addon IDE ATA100 controller.  Lilo seems to work just fine.  Try that out just to get your system booted ( I know your anxious ;o), then work on Grub if you want.  Boot off of the cd, mount and chroot to your installation, emerge lilo (not installed by default), edit lilo.conf, run lilo, enjoy your new Gentoo system.
