On the stage1 LiveCD it was compiled as module, so a 
# modprobe via-rhine 
should do it. (besides configuring the interface ...)
But isn't a script on the new live-cds, something like "net-conf". I read about
it shortly, somewhere on a gentoo-mailing list. Should be documented also.
