Botched vcr compile

I have just installed gentoo (1.4rc1), and am generally impressed. I have had one problem that I haven't been able to work out, though. I get an error message, "!!! Function src_compile, Line -153, Exitcode 2; !!! emake died" when trying to emerge vcr. Any clues as to what I need to do to get this to compile?
