If you don't mind installing from a more stripped out system then I'd try
with the 1.2 install CD, there's less on it to go wrong. It's not the 
version of the CD that determines the version of gentoo that you get, it's 
the base tarball that you use; so you can boot a 1.2 install CD, download 
the 1.4 tarball with it and get a 1.4 system.
