Ok, that did not work; I think somehow the previous build of gdkpixbuf
was corrupted or the package was incomplete -- during the "make" stage
there were lots of "file not found" type errors involving (IIRC)
xs/GtkWhatever files. I did remember about using "script" to capture all
the output this time, but I'm not going to post it unless somebody really
wants to see it. :)
I found the solution, or work-around, in the same forum thread you
pointed out -- use "emerge '<gdk-pixbuf-0.20.0'" to install an earlier
version. Everything went smoothly after version 0.18.0 was installed...
well, up until the drive filled up. It seems the recommended 1.5GB (I
thought I was being generous with 2GB) is not enough if you are building
an entire system including KDE from source. :)

Anyway, after removing a bunch of archives from .../portage/distfiles, I
was able to finish building KDE. That reminds me -- from which
directories may I safely remove files? I figure removing the distfiles
is safe because emerge will just grab them again if needed, but there is
over 50MB of stuff in locale/... I guess I need to fix things so only one
or two languages are built.
