Your original question about 10Gb of disk space been resonable seems
good to me. If this is the family PC most of the family will want to use
windows initially for games and office stuff running under windows.  If
you use FAT32 for your Windows file system and then mount that under
Linux yopu can have read write access to your entire Windows partition.

Even if you emerged most of Gentoo filling 10Gb of disk space for
servers would not be a problem.

As an example our home wireless access base station runs a basic install
a load of wireless tools, DNS, firewall and traffic shaping software, a
http proxy, DHCPD and a load of security auditing demons and tools.  This
is on a P75 32Mb of ram and all off a 850*Mb* harddisk.

Alternatively if you can afford it go out and buy a cheap second hard
disk for your linux distro and install it on that.
