various configuration and setup things

hi

i am still pre-X with my gentoo installation but I have some questions 
allready :)  My previous linux distro was redhat 7.3 and I have become quite 
used to how it worked. 

1) - in RH when root logs out, the screen clears.  How do you achieve this ?
2) - I am used to having some global aliases, like ll="ls -lp --color=auto". 
How would I go about setting a gloval alias? Another example is vi="vim"
3) - I know that there is a file which displays on the login screen.  (I know 
meaning, I have heard of it) RH overwrites this file with each bootup.  I 
cannot seem to find this file in /etc/. Where is it ? ex.

4) - I have decided to try out the framebuffer device.  fbset works and I have 
a setting which I like.  When the kernel boots though, it sets the fb 
settings to some default level, and then later (in local) I have to set the 
fb device again.  Where can I change what the default fb setting is that the 
kernel sets up ?
5) - How van I see 'n list of packages allready emerge'd and or downloaded 
(with the emerge- f option)
