Problem with 1.4rc1 basic LiveCD -- won't boot; getting kmod errors

Has anyone else had problems with the 1.4rc1 LiveCD? I can't even get to a 
login prompt! At one point it starts spewing out a steady stream of this:

kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k binfmt -0000, errno=8

This is very confusing... I thought it was a problem with one or more of my 
drives (it seems the above error happens a lot in relation to filesystem 
problems), but I even tried the CD without any hard drives, and tried a 
different CD-ROM, just to make sure it wasn't some sort of IDE problem. I 
turned off (and then turned back on) any special features (like SMART) in 
my BIOS, to no avail. Here's a quick rundown of the pertinent hardware:

ECS K7S6A mobo (uses SIS 745 chipset)
Athlon XP 1600+
two 256MB strips of no-name PC2100 DDR RAM
ASUS 50x ATA CD-ROM
40GB IBM DeskStar IDE HD
30GB Western Digital WD300 IDE HD
Realtek RTL8059 PCI ethernet card

Any ideas? All I can think of is that there are some zero-length kernel 
modules on the CD itself, but that doesn't make any sense either, because 
nobody else is having this problem. I know this kmod problem was common in 
the 2.3 Linux kernel, but I woulda assumed it had been fixed by 2.4.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm really excited about a 
power-user system that's easy(ish) to install and fast.
