hmmmmmmmm... thanks for the tip (nobody else has answered me yet), but I 
tried the Intel Ethernet drivers and it didn't seem to work. My Realtek 
card uses the same drivers as the NE2000 cards.

Anyway... ummm... I've decided that the DHCP kernel panic problem is 
something I can work around by being veeeery careful... but I still can't 
figure out why DHCP doesn't grab an IP addy at all, regardless of whether 
it crashes or not. Has anyone had experience of setting up a network 
interface on a cable connection?!? (specifically shaw.ca) I've never had 
DHCP problems before on cable.
