Since I hadn't read about it anywhere I thought I'd mention it. This requires a Linux distro that can use your Speedtouch - in my case this was Mandrake. After you unpacked the stage1 tarball onto your new partition for Gentoo, of course you want a network connection. But in my case, my Solaris box wouldn't use the Speedtouch any more than the Gentoo install. So I rebooted into my working Mandrake, chroot'ed from there after mounting the Gentoo partition, and voila, "emerge sync" gives me my 60 KB/sec downloads! Compilation is running as I speak...
