I've been using /etc/init.d/hdparm to disable DMA on the old drive, so I'll just leave the new one alone and see how it works. (I still got I/O errors on the old IBM even with DMA off, so it didn't do what I was hoping anyway.) You say that DMA works... how did you test it? hdparm to disable it, then hdparm -T -t to test, re-enable and repeat?
