"artificial intelligence" has been a field of computer study since the
1940s or so. The first of a couple "AI Winters" when funding was slashed
and interest was heavily decreased, due to the lack of appreciable
results, was in 1974. People realized they had heavily, heavily
overestimated their abilities and heavily, heavily underestimated how
large the problem was to solve.

So yeah, "AI" has been in the works for a long time and we're still no
closer than we were in the 50's towards creating living digital
consciousnesses. Science Fiction novels are full of more and more AIs,
obviously, but those are easy to make -- all you need to do is take a
few writing classes.
