Now that you remind me, I had to do that once before, and it did the job.

In the end, there was nothing for it but to follow Google's AI recommendation:

If your setup is thoroughly broken, clearing the configuration and database
files acts as a factory reset.
1. Back up your existing emails via KMail's File > Back Up Data... or
export rules using the PIM Data Exporter.
2. Close KMail and stop the Akonadi server:
akonadictl stop
3. Delete the configuration directories:
rm -rf ~/.config/akonadi_* ~/.config/kmail*
rm -rf ~/.local/share/akonadi/ ~/.local/share/kmail2/
4. Restart Akonadi and open KMail to reconfigure your accounts from scratch.

I was surprised at how much survived that process: most of what can be set
under the Settings menu of KMail; identities, server name and so on.
