Problems passing the root password to "app-crypt/veracrypt"

Greetings,

after my last routine Gentoo upgrade Veracrypt failed to mount any of my
encrypted USB sticks. This is not the current version of Veracrypt, but
rather "app-crypt/veracrypt-1.25.9-r2" the last version capable of still
working on my TrueCrypt encrypted USB sticks with NTFS filesystems. It
worked the evening before the upgrade, but now it doesn't anymore: it
asks for the root password, I enter it and Veracrypt just displays the
error message

   mount: /media/veracrypt64: unknown filesystem type 'ntfs3'.
   dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.

No, this password didn't change and I'm still able to successfully run

   $ sudo echo test
   Password:
   test
   $

in a terminal window. Anyway, these were the packages processed (nei-
ther "app-crypt/veracrypt" itself nor any of its dependencies were in-
volved):
