WOW :-D -- BINGO :-D !!
The former version was 2.41.4-r1, and so I masked ">sys-apps/util-linux-
2.41.4-r1", rebuilt "sys-apps/util-linux", plugged in one of my encrypt-
ed USB sticks, asked VeraCrypt to mount it, entered the root password --
and the stick got mounted on the new, meanwhile built and booted kernel.
I did not yet test it, but I am pretty sure the still available former
kernel won't behave differently. Will try tomorrow.

It is. My kernel is (again) configured with "CONFIG_NTFS3_FS" unset. I
tested this yesterday, but enabling "CONFIG_NTFS3_FS" prevented unen-
crypted NTFS formatted USB sticks from being mounted. All these sticks
are shared between my Gentoo box and two Windows laptops on which good
ol' TrueCrypt is still installed.
