unofficial/unsupported storage upgrade to old PE2900?

I recall reading somewhere in the past that people have upgraded old PE
2900 servers from a PERC 6/i to PERC H700 in order to install > 2TB hard
drives in the PE 2900. If my recollection is correct, all that was
needed as a SFF-8087 to SFF-8484 cable. Anyone here try similar
upgrades? Any experience with the newer controllers than the H700? H710?

I'm looking to upgrade my 2900, so just wanted to see what other
unofficial/unsupported options are out there that people have tried with
success (or failure - so I should avoid)?
