Depends on which part... I deal with Coast to Coast Memory (C2C) as a
matter of routine at Trenton Computer Festival. Their prices are always
good, and most of their people know what they're talking about.
The question I would ask is *WHOSE* memory it is. As with most memory
vendors, C2C gets their stock from a number of sources, including PNY and
Crucial. The $77 price may be for generic modules, OEM versions of a name
brand such as Crucial or PNY, or an actual brand. If you don't know this
(and therefore, don't ask) it is a crapshoot.
That is not to say that generic memory is any better or worse, but rather
that not all generic modules will perform equally. Case in point: I have
such a module that would act up after the machine was running a few hours
(the module would test out fine). When I switched it to a machine I
normally don't use as much, I didn't have that problem anymore. I put a
brand name module in the same machine, and it did not do this... Both
computers are identical in every respect but one: The one where the generic
module first was a mini-tower, and the other a full tower. Turned out the
design of the generic module was the culprit (heat dissipation). Go figure...
Heat in laptops is a bigger issue than in a tower case. Therefore that
would be the risk taken with a generic, hence its possibly being too good
to be true.
I'd ask C2C about the module, and go from there...
