New kernel 2.4.20-18.9 - looking better for Vaios?

Running a Sony Vaio PCG FR700 (AMD Chip) with Redhat 9 and Andy Grimberg's 
special Kernel.

I upgraded the kernel via up2date and predictably, it wasn't configured for 
ACPI. However, even though it wasn't working, when I booted into this later 
kernel, I noticed that a few ther things started working. Significantly I 
could use the Fn buttons to move between the laptop screen and the plugged in 
monitor, whereas currently, I need to switch at boot up and then I am stuck 
with the choice that I make now.

I need to upgrade the kernel in order to get the AC97 drivers for the modem 
going as they currently won't install, so I have no modem.

I decided to have a go at recompiling the new kernel. Switched into 
/usr/src/linux-2.4.20-18.9 and ran make xconfig.

Created a configuration (that included acpi etc) .

Now, when I tried to recompile the kernel, I got as far as make dep bzImage. 
That appeared to go OK. I tried to make modules and it complained about 
grubby and made reference to /dev/hda (/boot on my system is on /dev/hda1)

I have tried several times, but I get the same problem. 

I think that the new kernel holds out a great deal of hope that it can iron 
out a lot of the bugs found in Vaio setups. Could anyone give me a hint as to 
what i might be doing wrong? Hwappy t provide .config files etc once I get 
past this little glitch.
