Just as an amusing counterexample--my wife recently finished writing
her dissertation, which she did almost entirely on Word 5.0 on a
Powerbook 145 first purchased in (if I remember correctly) 1993. She's
thinking about finally getting a new laptop but claims nothing measures
up to the old trackball for a pointing device. (I tend to agree.
Perhaps touchpads are lighter and more space-efficient, but they're not
as nice ot use.)

My mom also finally had to give up last year on mid-80's-vintage PC
clone she used for email (worked fine as a dial-up terminal, and she
liked the old amber monitor).

I'm with you on the extended warranty thing--they only sell them because
they know it's on average a win for them, and laptops aren't usually
such a large part of your budget that you can't afford to
self-insure--but let's not put down trusty old hardware....
