The 8.2 kernel does have ACPI built in, but for some strange reason SuSE doesn't start the ACPI daemon automatically. As root, try "rcacpid start". If you decide to install SuSE, you can use the runlevel editor in YaST to make sure the daemon gets started automatically when you boot. (This one had me scratching my head for a while too) sjb
