I don't know exactly what I did differently, but I tried reconfiguring the card again and it now works at high resolution. Render is supported too. BTW, for those who are curious about the current state of the i830 and XFree86, see Intel® 830M/845G/852GM/855GM/865G Driver for XFree86™ http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/845driver.html SuSE also found my Epson scanner and dealt nicely with my Lucent wireless card.
