Well, I did expect that the number of applications available would be limited ;-)

However, SuSE invites people to use the LiveEval CD to assess hardware
compatibility.  I was hoping to verify that basic installation of SuSE 8.2
will be a fairly painless experience, and to identify the problems that I'll
need to fix (such as the "rcacpid start" issue) if I decide to nuke my
RH7.3(patched) installation and upgrade to SuSE 8.2.

I've patched and compiled X from scratch before, so am not daunted by doing so
again if I really have to.  It would be nice to know whether the version of X
that ships with SuSE 8.2 contains the i830 patch *and* supports XRender.

This is important to me as I wish to run Crossover Office, and its font
rendering scheme will not work correctly unless XRender support is available.


I'm still not sure if I can install SuSE 8.2 directly from the CDROM or will
have to do the initial installation via FTP. (A quick search through the
archive failed to yield any helpful insights.  Can I assume that if the
LiveEval CDROM boots and "installs" from the CDROM drive, so will the
distribution CDs? )

For which I'm much obliged to sjb!  It would have taken me a while to track
that down otherwise.
