Seriously, there is a limit to what you can expect from a fixed CDrom based
demo, as some of the read-me files on that cd would have mentioned.

I'm pretty sure all the 505 users on this list are running at significantly
higher than 640x480.
Note that the battery applet needs acpi to work, and even then its
a fairly minimal utility.  The akpi utility (which you can google for, or
find it on the CD/DVD of the boxed set) is a much better utility IMHO.

But, as sjb mentioned, you need acpid to be running, start it in the
runlevel editor, configure it to start on boot (B) and never shut
down.
