acpid dont work /proc/event

In my vaio 505 with kernel 2.4.20 standart and redhat 9 dont work
acpi.... who is this problem??

[root@meca updates]# /etc/init.d/acpid start
Starting acpi daemon: acpid: can't open /proc/acpi/event: No such file
or directory
                                                           [FAILED]
[root@meca updates]#


any one can hel;p me ??/? please...
