I also have a PCG-R505TS (And I resent you calling it old! ;), I'm running
RH9 + Andy's kernel kernel-2.4.20-9_ajg4.  I haven't tried using
orinoco_cs, I currently use the linux-wlan.org drivers for my card, they
have extra goodness in them for war-whatever etc etc.  I don't think the
Lucent cards are PRISM based so that probably won't work for you.

Have you used this laptop in windows?  I dual boot at the moment, and the
fan is as loud in windows as it is in Linux for me, this laptop's fan is
just plain loud.  Definitly takes getting used to, or maybe just accepting
it.  It revs up and down as the CPU gets used and its kind of annoying,
since it is constantly changing speeds.  I can tell when processes start
like updatedb because the cpu kicks in.

I don't believe there is a suspend-to-ram available yet for the Vaio or
any Linux that I am aware of, if anyone on the list knows please respond. 
Some folks have had success with suspend-to-disk but it seems it is still
very beta-ish.  That is next on my list to try, hopefully this weekend.
