I don't know SuSE-specific, but I've set up shorewall on Mandrake to
handle it without intervention. I just set up interfaces and zones for
wired, wireless, and vmnet (VMWare), in addition to the fw zone (meaning
localhost). Then I set general policies for each zone-to-zone
interaction, then specific rules for specific exceptions.

With Mandrake 9.0 I had to do a service network restart to transition
from one connection-type to the other, but 9.1's ifplugd handles it
automatically most of the time. I'd expect SuSE has something similar.
