To reply to myself, and for the benefit of others who might be interested, I
finally got the card working.

I switched kernels from 2.4.20-gentoo-r4 to 2.4.22-pre6-ac1 and the problem
went away! I'm using the linux-wlan-ng drivers (PRISM2 chipset) and life is
good again.
