For what it is worth, I struggled with my PGC-NVR23 Vaio, Suse 8.2 and sound
card (VIA VT8233) for a couple of days, but gave up and decided to tackle my
NVidia GeForce 420 card and install the 3D drivers;  come back to the sound
later.

Surprise, surprise, the sound kicked in and has worked fine upon restarting
X with the NVidia 3D driver enabled!  I ran SAX to enable the 3D settings
and when X restarted, there the sound was.

Go figure.  If you have a NVidia card, try it;  voodoo Linux, but hey...

I would have to agree that it is hard to make sound work, UNLESS you stumble
across a fix like I did (and you are just learning Linux).

BTW:  I DID reinstall with the "ACPI=NO" kernel message after messing about
with my initial installation.
