I looked at this website and didn't find it helpful for my sound problems:

I have no /dev/dsp of any kind.  No /dev/dsp, dsp0, dsp239, etc.

I have a /dev/sndstat file that hard-locks my computer when I do a 'cat' on it.

If I try to just activate my sound, a /dev/dsp gets created and points to nil.

If I try to activate alsa sound, my computer locks.

All I have in my modules.conf file is:

So I have apci defaulting to off.  From my bootup:

Then here is what my vaio laptop (FXA49) attempts to do with the via 686:

I have devices sharing IRQ9: 
   -USB UHCI (x2)
   -OHCI-1394 1.0

But it seems my soundcard is trying to get irq10:
IRQ routing conflict for 00:07.5, have irq 5, want irq 10
                          ^^^^^^
                      location of via82cxxx_audio on bus from Mandrake
                      Control Center 9.1.

Actually, Under Mandrake Control Center 9.1, I see vt82C686 displayed under 
    the soundcard and unknowns:
     -Soundcard: VT82C686 [Apollo Super AC97/Audio]
     -Unknown/others: VT82C686 [Apollo Super AC97/Modem]
    
and both want IRQ 10, but have 5.

So......don't know what to do.
